Renewal in one sentence
Your remote pilot certificate has no expiry date, but to fly as remote pilot in command under Part 107 you must have passed the knowledge test or completed recurrent training within the previous 24 calendar months (14 CFR 107.65).
What "24 calendar months" means
Calendar months count to the end of the month. If you passed on 15 March 2025, you are current until 31 March 2027, not 15 March. The calculator above does the counting and gives you a calendar file with a reminder 30 days before.
| Last test or training | Current until |
|---|---|
| 2 January 2025 | 31 January 2027 |
| 15 March 2025 | 31 March 2027 |
| 30 November 2025 | 30 November 2027 |
Which course to take
Both courses are online on FAASafety.gov and cost nothing (FAA):
| You hold | Course |
|---|---|
| A Part 107 certificate only | Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent (ALC-677) |
| A Part 107 certificate and a Part 61 pilot certificate with a current flight review | Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent (ALC-515) |
The FAA describes recurrent training only as an online course, so there is nothing to book at a testing center. You need a FAASafety.gov account; keep the course completion certificate as your record.
What the course covers
Recurrent training follows the same knowledge areas as the initial test listed in 14 CFR 107.73: regulations, airspace, weather, loading and performance, emergencies, crew resource management, radio, drugs and alcohol, decision-making, airport operations, maintenance and preflight, and night operations. If it has been two years, the practice quiz is a quick way to see what you have forgotten.
If you let it lapse
Nothing is taken away: your certificate stays valid. You simply may not act as remote pilot in command under Part 107 until you complete the recurrent course. Flying under Part 107 in the gap would be outside the rule, so take the course first.
Other things that also renew
- Drone registration: $5 per drone, valid three years, renewed on FAADroneZone (FAA). It is a separate clock from your recurrent training.
- Waivers and airspace authorizations: each has its own end date, written on it.
