## What it covers

14 CFR 107.73 lists the knowledge areas for the initial test and for recurrent training:

| Area (107.73) | Typical study points (our summary) |
|---|---|
| Regulations | Know the Part 107 limits, privileges and reporting duties |
| Airspace | Read a sectional chart: class boundaries, floors and ceilings, restricted and military areas |
| Weather | Read METARs and TAFs, understand how density altitude and wind affect a drone |
| Loading and performance | Weight and balance, load factor in turns |
| Emergency procedures | Lost link, fly-aways, battery fires |
| Crew resource management | Working with a visual observer and crew |
| Radio communications | Find and use frequencies such as an airport's CTAF |
| Drugs and alcohol | The physiological effects and the rules |
| Decision-making | Judgment and risk assessment |
| Airport operations | Traffic patterns, runway markings |
| Maintenance and preflight | Inspection routines |
| Night operations | Lighting, night vision and illusions |

The FAA's own list of topics on its certification page matches this ([FAA](https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot)).

## How to study

1. **Start with the free FAA sample questions.** The [UAG sample guide](https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/training_testing/testing/test_questions/uag_questions.pdf) (dated 10 August 2021) has 46 questions. Its first ten alone cover moist unstable air, Class C rules, density altitude, CTAF frequencies, scanning for traffic, load factor in a banked turn and military operating areas: expect that range.
2. **Learn the chart.** Many questions point to a figure from the testing supplement. Practise finding airspace floors and airport information on it.
3. **Memorise the hard numbers.** Altitudes, speeds, visibility and cloud distances are easy points: the [rules at a glance](https://autonomousdronesoftware.com/part-107-rules/) page has them in one table.
4. **Take the quiz above** until you pass comfortably, then a full-length practice exam.

## On test day

Bring the ID listed above. After you pass, the score report carries a 17-digit exam ID: you need it for Form 8710-13 in IACRA, as described in [how to get the Part 107 license](https://autonomousdronesoftware.com/part-107-license/).

## Not ready to pay for a course?

You do not need one. A structured course helps if you have never read an aviation chart or a weather report; the FAA's sample questions and the regulation itself are free.
